GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The Model 501J Programmable DC Voltage Standard is a versatile reference source, designed to meet the needs of computer systems, production line testing, automated calibration and standards laboratories.

The 501J has a specified accuracy, and are traceable through a bank of saturated standard cells to the U.S. National Institute of Standards & Technologies.  The 501J is a highly accurate reference which can be used for calibration of digital voltmeters, analog meters, semiconductor analyzing systems, analog references for computers, analog-to-digital converters, telemetry and data acquisition systems, and wherever a stable source is required.

The 501J is also equipped with overload and short circuit protection, and is fully operational in normal environmental conditions.  The unit will drive a short circuit indefinitely without damage, and will recover to rated specifications in less than 10ms

* Note: The rated accuracy of the 100mV range applies when the RL is 150k ohms or higher. (see Output Impedance) e.g.. where Zo = 3 ohms and RL = 150k ohms. IR error = 0.002% of programmed value. Remote sensing, 4-terminal, is provided on all ranges 10V and higher.

Accuracy (Relative to N.I.S.T. Standards):
±(0.002% of setting + 0.0005% of range + 3µV). The Accuracy statement is based on the “Limit-of--Error” (or “worst-case”) method. All other specifications noted hereafter, which affect accuracy, e.g.., line, load, temperature, drift changes are included in the accuracy statement. Thus, all other specifications are listed as *NON-ADDITIVE. Specifications guaranteed for 12 months.
Setting Time: 50µS to 0.002% of programmed voltage, including polarity change.
Stability (*non-additive): 24 hrs., ±0.001%; 90 days, ±0.0015%;1 year, ±0.002%.
Ripple and Noise: 0.0005% of range + 2µVrms in a band-pass of 0.1Hz to 100kHz, no random spikes.
Output Current: 10V range, 100mV, EMF into 150k ohm load. Note: The rated accuracy of the 100mV range applies when the RL = 150k ohms or higher. (See Output Impedance) e.g. Where Zo = 3 ohms and RL = 150k ohms. IR error = 0.002% of programmed value.
Remote sensing, 4-terminal, is provided on 10V range.
Output Impedance: 10V range, 0.03 ohms; 100mV range, constant 3 ohms.
Regulation (*non-additive): Line and load, ±0.0005%.
Protection: Short-circuit and overload protection with front panel indicator. Standby/Ready signal to programmer.
Isolation: Power transformer primary to analog output, 25G ohms, 300pF; control logic-to-analog output, with opto-isolators P/N IS-40, 1G ohm 130pF, 500Vdc.
Temperature Coefficient (*non-additive): Ambient, ±0.0005%/°C; operating limit, ±0.001%/°C.

The following information applies to the Mainframe Model 501, without options, etc. For additional functions and ranges see the following pages for options, accessories, and auxiliary instruments.
Parallel Entry
   Input Loading Factor: 1 TTL standard load per bit line.
   Logic Swing: Logical “0” = 0.8V (max.) Logical “1” = +2V (min.)
   Code: Binary coded decimal (BCD).
   Logic Lines: 20 lines + strobe + return (parallel entry).

ACCESSORIES AND OPTIONS
Straight Binary Entry: Order 501/J-2, this is the equivalent to 6 decimal digits or 24 bit resolution.

Mating Connectors: Supplied with new instruments, field installable.

Rack Mounting Brackets (with handles): Part No. RK-01, supplied with new instruments.
Memory Register: Part No. MR-1 (for parallel only). This eliminates the requirement to “hold-up” the bit lines in order to sustain the programmed voltage output. The register will only respond to the level command. Thus, the programmer may be used for other functions while the calibrator voltage is maintained. Construction: Plug-in PC board, field installable.
Opto-Isolation:
Part No. IS-40. The opto-isolators provide the maximum isolation between the logic circuit and the analog output 1G ohm, 130pF, 500Vdc. Many applications do not require this high degree of isolation. The opto-isolators are conveniently mounted on a plug-in PC board. Therefore, the opto-isolators may be installed, in the field, when and if the need arises.
GPIB, GPIB Interface: Part No. KT-488 (optional). Opto-isolation is included. Construction: Two plug-in PC boards, field installable.
